U.S. diplomat says lifting sanctions depends on Iran's return to JCPOA

A senior U.S. administration official claimed that Washington would not ease its pressure and sanctions until Iran fulfilled its obligations under the JCPOA.

According to the Times of Israel, Brett McGurk, coordinator of the U.S. National Security Council on issues related to West Asia and North Africa, attended a gathering of Jewish leaders in U.S. society, claiming that sanctions remain in place until Iran has returned to its JCPOA commitments.

As long as world powers and Iran have not reached an agreement to return to the JCPOA, Washington will not lift any anti-Iranian sanctions, he claims. 

He added: "Until we get anywhere (in the negotiations) and achieve a firm commitment, it is clear that unless Iran's nuclear program is curriculated, the problematic aspects (Iran's nuclear program) are not reversed and returned to the mainstream, we will not be under any pressure. 

McGurk, who has a history of representing the U.S. special representative in the alleged anti-ISIS coalition and former U.S. National Security Council adviser, said, "We have a long way to go, and this is a complicated process, but the United States is not going to pay in advance just to continue the process." On behalf of Iran, we must see a fundamental commitment to limit its nuclear program so that we can fully inspect and monitor (Iran's nuclear program).

"At the end of the day, we need to have the ability to resolve the issue through diplomatic means," he ultimately claimed. I think this agreement will be firm and assure us what prospects we have over the years.

The U.S. official's claims come as Iran has repeatedly stressed that Tehran will not fully implement its JCPOA commitments unless the United States lifts all sanctions.
