Russia has recently tightened its grip on the Internet and imposed legal action against foreign technology companies for failing to remove concepts banned by Moscow authorities, ISNA reported, citing al-Jazeera news channel.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on her Telegram channel: "There is one reason and that is interference in the Russian elections. We hope that's how U.S. diplomats report it to Washington.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also said in a separate statement that US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan held a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Friday.
The ministry also said in its statement: "The U.S. Ambassador to Russia has been given sufficient reasons that major U.S. technology companies violated Russian laws regarding the impending elections.
"These companies also interfered in the internal affairs of other countries," the ministry said.
Tensions between the US and Moscow have intensified over a series of issues, including allegations of Russian meddling in the US presidential election as well as Russia's human rights record.
In May of this year, Moscow officially declared the United States an "unfriendly" country and banned its embassy from employing Russian nationals.
