Australia overtakes China in gold production

According to published reports, Australia was able to overtake China in gold production in the first half of 2021 by activating new mines.

According to Metals News, the Australians were able to overtake China in the production of the yellow metal in the first half of this year, producing 157 tons of gold, which is 4 tons more than China. Of course, 74 tons of this amount is related to the first quarter of 2021 and 83 tons were produced in the second quarter. This represents a 12 per cent increase in Australian gold production in the first half of this year, driven by new Australian operations in the second quarter of this year.

According to the US Geological Survey, China was the world's largest gold producer from 2007 to 2020, behind South Korea. Australia, meanwhile, has been the world's second-largest gold producer for more than a decade.

It is worth mentioning that the production of gold mines in the world in 2020 decreased by 3% compared to the previous year and reached 3,200 tons. Also last year, China produced 380 tons of gold, unchanged from the same period in 2019, and continued to be the world's largest producer of this metal, followed by Australia with 320 tons of gold in second place in the world. In addition, Russia, as the third largest producer of gold in the world, was able to produce 300 tons of yellow metal by 2020.
