Impure iron
Iron must be purified after extraction from the mines.
Minerals from which iron is extracted are mostly as iron oxides, such as magnetite or hematite.
Iron ore is associated with 2 to 20% of impurities (such as silicates and aluminates).
These impurities are separated from the iron in the furnace and are excreted as waste.
The refined and concentrated ore enters the furnace in the form of fine powder grains.
The most suitable particle size is between 6 and 25 mm.
Today, natural iron sulfide is not used in iron extraction and is mostly used in the production of sulfuric acid.
Iron in nature is present in combination with other materials.
