The bolts are a very diverse range that each one could have a unique production method . Besides , beads production requires interior grooves which needs specific equipment and different kinds of it needs knowledge-based activities to find out the best production process , however , normal bolts and screws have similar production process .
Production of nuts usually done by cold forge and beads are done by warm forge . Process of production before production for warm and cold forges could be somehow different ( depending on the type of screws ) but common bolts are produced in a same method .
Nuts are produced differently due to the location of application , the size , accuracy and the number . The production of nut making has three important levels :
1. Cutting off the metals
2. Production of the body of nuts
3. Grooving the exterior side
The main difference to produce all kinds of beads is grooving but the total process has three stages as named below :
1. Cutting off the metals
2. Production of the body of beads
3. Makig the middle hole
4. Grooving the interior side of the hole
All of the bolts can be made by machining method , a time-consuming method which takes a lot of time and it’s not suitable for all bolts .
In this method firstly the body of bolts machines which will have less quality and resistance in comparison with smithy , then grooving does on some parts of the hole .
In mass production some devices can be used in order to increase the circulation of production .
Turnery : Turnery devices are suitable for manufacturing bolts with low numbers . This method costs more and accuracy of the work is very low . Bolts shaped in this method having less mechanical resistance due to the rupture of the fibers .
Tapping : This method is used to produce beads with soft alloys and is one of the high cost methods of producing bolts . Tapping are divided into two manual and machine types and are used to produce internal grooves .
Threading : Threading also takes much of time and cost however the resulting bolts has less quality and it is useful for exterior grooves .
- Production of large bolts with high peak which is affordable to take time for them .
- Production of hard bolts that they could not be done via cold or warm forge .
- Production of non-standard custom bolts produced in small circulation .
The 2nd method of bolts production is casting or injection . In this method the piece entered the shapes defined in the device . After shaping completed , the cooling operation begins and then the formed pieces removed from the forms . Depending on where the screws and bolts are to be used , the operation is done . If the beauty or polish does not matter in bolts there is no need to operation . Casting is suitable for very low height bolts . Also Injection method is suitable for bolts with low accuracy .
The 3rd method of bolts production is rolling . In this method , the form of the grooves on the hard rolling has been transferred to the pieces . Rolling method is facing with limitations in production of bolts and nuts with different diameters and lengths .
Here are some advantages of rolling method :
- low costs rather than machining
- less time consumed
- Primary materials are much more efficient to prepare
- Easy transportation due to the less weight
- Suitable operation and smooth surface
The last method of bolts and nuts production is heading . This method is also used to produce clinches . The speed of the process is high and there are less wastes remains at the end .
Heading is done into two ways . Cold heading and Warm heading .
● Heading can be categorized as an economical method because of :
- Low costs
- High quality of the final products
- High speed
- Less wastes
- Efficient costs of primary materials
- High resistance of resulting bolts against hit and erosion
- High diversity in sizes of bolts and nuts
Bolts and nuts are important parts of different industries . Dimensions of these bolts vary from a few cm to few meters (maximum 6 meters) in different grades and are available to world’s standards . They are produced via different methods such as casting , rolling , heading and machining .
