Silicon is a chemical element from the quasi-metal family, which is in the fourteenth group and the third period of the periodic table of elements. It is the most abundant element in the Earth's crust after oxygen. This element is usually found in nature in the form of quartz. Silicon has many wide applications in industry, the most important application of which is ferrosilicon.
It is a mixture of iron and silicon that is made in an electric arc furnace, which is based on the production of ferrosilicon, carbothermic reactions. In addition to iron and silicon, impure elements such as manganese, chromium, phosphorus, sulfur and aluminum are present in amounts less than 5% in ferrosilicon.
In addition to these substances, carbon is present in all compounds of ferrosilicon as the impure moon and as the main third element. Ferrosilicon is produced in different grades such as 10 to 90% grade.
Ferrosilicon alloy has different applications, but its main applications are:
1. Used in the steel industry as an oxygenator
2. As the basis for the production of ferrosilicon, carbothermic reactions
3. Production of electrodes that can be used in welding
4. Used as a germinating agent in casting furnaces
5. As an alloy for the production of magnesium ferrosilicon and ferromanganese silicon
6. Used in the steel industry to increase the strength and various grades of steel
Ferrosilicon production is based on carbothermic reactions, which produce a variety of materials, including silica (quartz) and iron oxide. Now if this reaction involves some amount of electrical energy with reducing agents; If we add carbon at the right reduced temperature, a new substance called ferrosilicon will be produced.
In general, the primary material in this reaction is granulated silica and iron oxide, to which reducing agents such as coal, coke, and charcoal are added.
Melting operations in steel mills are carried out on average once every two hours and the ferrosilicon produced is frozen in special substrates after discharge. Now that these materials have cooled, they are crushed by crushers and packed in bulk or in large bags with different granulations.
Ferrosilicon is one of the most important compounds used in various industries, the most important of which is the metallurgical industry and is of great importance in this regard. How this substance is used varies in different industries, but in general it depends to a large extent on the ratio of iron and silicon used in it, as well as the amount of different impurities used in it.
Ferrosilicon materials are usually packaged in one of three ways :
1. Large 1 ton bags
2. In bulk
3. Based on their granulation in 10 kg bags
