Gallium is a chemical element with the GA symbol and atomic number 31 . Gallium is a soft , silvery metal with standard temperature and pressure . Gallium is placed in group 13 of periodic table and has similarities with other metals in its group , namely aluminum , indium , thallium . Gallium is not found free in the environment but it is found in Gallium compounds ( III ) in small amount in the zinc ore and bauxite .
It is converted to liquid at a temperature above 29.76 _ C ( 85.57 ° F ) , melting at a normal body temperature , 37 ° C (99 ° F)in your hand . Gallium is widely used in electronics . Gallium arsenide is its primary chemical compound that is used in electronics , microwave circuits , high speed switching circuits and infrared circuits . Generally Gallium is considered as an important technological element .
Before gallium was discovered , the Russian chemist and inventor Dmitry Mendeleev , the author of the periodic table , this metal was filled with the name eka-aluminum , because he knew that a metal will be found and placed in periodic table in 31th cell .
This metal was first discovered by the French chemist Pierre Lecoq in 1875 which studied the range of chemical elements for over 15 years .
Lecoq wondered whether the element 31 in periodic table could be found in zinc ore ? Zinc with atomic number 31 is near the Gallium . By August 1875 , the scientist found some Gallium using spectroscopy . He reported that the range of new element is made up of thin purple ray which is easily visible .
Later this year , according to the Jefferson laboratory , Lecoq obtained pure Gallium hydroxide using electrolysis . The scientist , following the miners investigation , obtained several tons of zinc ore and produced a few grams of pure Gallium . Lecoq selected the Gallium name for the new element , which is derived from the Latin word Gallia which means France .
It has no known natural role in biology . Gallium ( III ) behaves in a similar manner to iron salts and has been used in some medical applications including drugs .
Gallium is not found free in nature but is easily achieved by melting . Gallium is a pure blue – silvery metal that is fragile like glass . Liquid gallium is expanded about 10.3 % when soliding . Therefore it should not be kept in glass or metallic containers , as it may break when the volume changes .
It has higher density more than water , silicon , germanium and plutonium .
It attacks most other metals by connecting the metal network . For example it connects to the side of the seeds of aluminum alloys , zinc and steel and make them absolutely fragile .
Gallium produces alloys easily with most metals and is used in small amounts in plutonium alloy gallium in the nucleus of plutonium bombs to stabilize the structure of the plutonium crystal .
This metal does not crystallize in any of the simple crystal structures . Its sustainable phase has eight atoms in a normal cell unit . Many stable and highly stable phases has usage in normal temperature and pressure . The metal is highly isotropic and its properties are depending on temperature especially near the melting point . For example , the thermal expansion coefficient is increased after melting slightly .

Gallium with very high purity is commercially available to be used in the semiconductors industry .
Gallium arsenide and Gallium nitride used in electronic components allocates about 98 % of the applications of this metal in the U.S.A in 2007 . Around the world , Gallium arsenide production , forms the 95 % of Gallium consumption annually .
In 2016 , about 7.5 billion dollars was spent making this compound , which 53 % of it is related to cell phones , 27 % in wireless communications and rest is used in automobile , consumer and military applications . The recent increase is mainly due to the 3G and 4G smart phones , which use 10 times more of it rather than the old models .
Gallium is easily treated with most metals , and is used as a material in low melting points . The Gallium , Indium and tin alloy is liquid in room temperature and is used in medical thermometers .
These group of alloys is used to cool down the computer chips instead of water and is mostly utilized as an alternative to thermal dough in calculations . While the alloys of Gallium have been evaluated as an alternative to mercury dental amalgam , these materials have not been yet widely used . Gallium is used to create bright mirrors too .
Although this metal does not have a certain function in biology , Gallium ions interacts with the processes in the body in a manner similar to iron (III) .
Since these processes contain inflammation and hallmark of many diseases , Gallium salts are used as drug and radiopharmaceutical .
This metal is not toxic , however , in vicinity of Gallium Halides compounds it could lead to high toxicity . Pure Gallium is not dangerous when it touches , but it causes spots on the hands when it melts . Though this metal is not harmful , it is not normally consumed in large doses .
However , some of the Gallium compounds can actually be very dangerous . For example , exposure to high Gallium chloride ( III ) can cause a sore throat , difficulty in respiration , chest pain , and its vapours can cause even very serious conditions , such as lung swelling and partial paralysis .
One of the uses of this metal is to make nuclear weapons and pollution caused by them . Gallium is used to hold some nuclear bombs together . The problem is that the process of eliminating Gallium , causes excessive water pollution with radioactive materials . Gallium is an ideal element for holding an atom bomb , but it has caused land pollution and is destructive for its residents ' health .
