The importance of metals and the use of organic compounds of intermediate metals in pharmacy is expanding day by day And the medications that are based on metals will play an effective role in treating patients . In this article, we will get acquainted with the use of some metals in drugs.

Sodium

Sodium has no medicinal effect, but it combines with different anions and these anions have a medicinal effect.

Sodium carbonate

It is used to treat poisoning, prevent crystals, damage the kidneys and reduce excess blood potassium.

Sodium chloride

It is used to wash the body tissues , body tissues and the cavities of the body .

Potassium chloride

It is used to treat blood potassium deficiency, chronic digoxin poisoning, patients with recurrent paralysis and cirrhosis of the liver. 90% of excess potassium is excreted through the kidneys and 10% through the feces.

Lithium

Lithium is taken as 300 and 400 mg tablets containing lithium carbonate to control and prevent mania attacks, depression in patients with bipolar disorder (manic-percussion), obsessive-compulsive disorder, anorexia nervosa, postpartum psychiatric disorders.

Negative effects

nausea

Diarrhea

Headache

Vertigo

Drowsiness

Convulsions

low blood pressure

General weakness

Renal complications

Magnesium hydroxide

It is used as an antacid and in combination with magnesium sulfate in the short-term treatment of constipation .

This compound neutralizes stomach acid but it 's ineffective on its production . As a laxative, it facilitates intestinal smoky movements and defecation by absorbing intestinal water.

Magnesium sulfate

It is used to treat magnesium deficiency, arrhythmias, after suspected cases of heart attack and to prevent seizures caused by clampsia. The magnesium effect mechanism is not well known However, it affects the Na + / K + pump of sodium, potassium and calcium channels and releases acetylcholine at the junction of the muscle nerve.

Calcium carbonate

In nipper phosphatemia due to renal failure, calcium and antacid reduction is used in the treatment of gastric ulcer .

calcium chloride

Used in cardiac resuscitation, severe calcium depletion and magnesium poisoning.

Calcium Disodium Edit

It is used in the treatment of poisoning with lead and some other heavy metals. Heavy metal replaces calcium in medicine and forms a stable complex with it and is excreted in the urine.

Calcium supplement

Treatment of blood calcium deficiency in patients who need a rapid increase in serum calcium, such as neonatal calcium deficiency muscle spasms and calcium deficiency muscle spasms during insect bites or allergic reactions, lead poisoning pain, vitamin D deficiency and alkalosis Electrolyte regulation, cardiac resuscitation, especially before cardiac surgery, to enhance myocardial contraction, antidote for magnesium poisoning, and treatment of calcium deficiency in patients with chronic parathyroidism, osteoporosis, and rickets.

Calcium D

It is used in cases of calcium deficiency, osteoporosis and vitamin D deficiency.

Calcium Dubsilat

Indications: vascular disorders, vascular insufficiency, retinal lesions and edema.

Calcium Fort

It is used as an effervescent tablet in the treatment of calcium deficiency and osteoporosis.

Calcium gluconate

Used to treat acute calcium deficiency, high potassium and magnesium and heart attack .

Calcium pantothenate

It is used in vitamin B5 deficiency and to prevent its deficiency. Pantothenic acid is a precursor of coenzyme A and is essential for various metabolic functions such as the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. This vitamin is used in the production of steroids, porphyrins and acetylcholine.

Borax

Boron in the form of borax is used as an antibacterial and emollient in creams and artificial skin medications.

Boric acid

It is used as a solution as a mouthwash, eye drops and insecticide .

Aluminum hydroxide

It is used as an antacid, increasing blood phosphate concentration in kidney failure, indigestion and preventing the formation of phosphate urinary stones. Al (OH) 3 reduces stomach acid by neutralizing HCl but it doesn 't affect the amount of its production . This compound reacts with phosphate in the intestine and precipitates as AlPO4 and is excreted in the feces.

Barium

Barium sulfate: Barium sulfate is used in radiography of the stomach, intestines and esophagus. Barium is also used to absorb x-rays in radiographic and tomographic tests. When barium sulfate passes through the body, it increases the absorption of x-rays. And the shape and structure of the gastrointestinal tract becomes more obvious.

Contraindications: intestinal obstruction, the possibility of gastrointestinal rupture.

Complications: Constipation, gastrointestinal infection if ruptured, diarrhea and appendicitis.

Copper sulfate

It is used as a substitute for copper in the body and a one percent solution for gastric lavage in phosphorus poisoning. Copper sulfate itself must be removed from the body immediately so as not to lead to copper poisoning.
