Molybdenum :

Molybdenum is not found in nature It is found in the form of molybdenite mineral in quartz rock veins. Molybdenum is very strong. Molybdenum was used in ancient times and during the war to build tank armor and aircraft engines. This chemical element is known by the symbol MO and atomic number 42.

history of molybdenum :

Molybdenum source in the 19th century was the Knaben mine in Norway. Molybdenum discovered in 1907. Molybdenum was implemented as a corrosion protection coating for malleable metals.

Molybdenum application :

molybdenum is a variety of dissimilar alloys . This element is very useful in steelmaking And it contains iron . Molybdenum is used in the manufacture of steel tools such as cast iron, fasteners, etc. Parts in which molybdenum should be used include: refinery piping systems, some military equipment, drills, drilling tools, heavy vehicles, ships, etc. The most and most popular uses of molybdenum (about 86%), steelmaking (about 35%), stainless steel (about 25%), chemicals (about 14%), tool and high-speed steels (about 9%), Cast iron (about 6%), super alloys (5%). Molybdenum powder is also used as fertilizer for plants, in power plants to control pollution, specialized applications such as mammography, medical imaging.

molybdenum is used in the lamp. Molybdenum is also used in the construction of high temperature furnaces and in vacuum as thermal elements. molybdenum is used in the ceramic and glass industry in the coating process . Molybdenum is used as a catalyst in the oil industry, especially in catalysts for the transport of organic sulfurs from petroleum products. molybdenum is used in the core isotope industry . Molybdenum is used as a pigment from red-yellow to orange in paint, inks, plastics and rubber industries. molybdenum is used in electronic industry , especially thin metal film .

Forms of molybdenum metal :

ingots

powder

Large crystals

rods or bars

Ductile sheets

molybdenum in plants :

Molybdenum is an essential component within two enzymes that convert nitrate to nitrite and then to ammonium. it is used in the synthesis of amino acids in plants .

Therefore, this element is essential for some atmospheric nitrogen-fixing bacteria that coexist with the Lego family. Plants also use molybdenum to convert phosphorus form into organic form .

Molybdenum producing countries :

China

united states

Canada

armenia

russia

Molybdenum is divided into two categories :

1.molybdenum disulfide : The chemical formula of this molybdenum MOS2 is a chemical compound . Its mass is 160.07 g / mol. this molybdenum is solid and black .

2.Molybdenum di silicon : With the chemical formula MISI2 is a chemical compound. Its mass is 11152 g / mol. The shape of this solid molybdenum is gray.

Molybdenum fabrication method :

Molybdenum is commonly found in nature in the form of molybdenum sulfide or MoS2 molybdenite and to some extent molybdenum oxide or paulite, in porphyry deposits alone or in combination with copper ores. Its ore is converted to molybdenum sulfur concentrate, mainly by flotation, with grades of 45 to 53%. This product is not practical in this way And must be converted to molybdenum oxide (MoO3) with grades of 60 to 65% by electric washing process in electric ovens, which has a large consumer market. Also, molybdenum is rarely produced as a 99% pure powder. 74% of molybdenum is primarily obtained directly from the processing of molybdenum ore and 26% of secondary molybdenum is obtained from the recovery of molybdenum alloys. european countries contribute significantly to molybdenum production.

Ferromolybdenum :

Ferromolybdenum is an alloy composed of iron and molybdenum. It has many applications in the industry . because they have high strength and has many properties. For example: It is used in casting and super alloys. Addition of ferromolybdenum to the product, causes corrosion resistance, improves welding, increases strength.

The effect of ferromolybdenum on steel and tools :

When ferromolybdenum is added to stainless steel, it protects stainless steel against corrosion, especially against chlorides, chemicals (sulfur), and increases weldability. Ferromolybdenum, after dissolving in the presence of carbon, produces carbides with the formulas Fe2Mo2C6, FeMo6C, Mo2C. Molybdenum increases the energy required to dissolve new iron atoms by increasing the pressure in front of the crystal lattice.

Application of ferromolybdenum :

1.it causes high temperature and softness of steel .

2.Folybdenum is used in boilers and pressure vessels.

3.Other tools are made of ferromolybdenum.

4.Used in antacid steels (automotive) and (aircraft).

5.Ferromolybdenum has significant applications in casting.

Diseases caused by molybdenum exposure :

Liver, stomach ulcers, diarrhea, seizures, blindness, weight loss, osteoporosis, and finally heart failure. Molybdenum reduces growth in mammals, including humans. there is potential to be exposed to molybdenum in the extraction and refinement operation , such as the chemical industry .

however , data have not reported any of its deleterious effects . To date, no poisoning from mining and molybdenum processing has been reported. Water-soluble composites can be slightly toxic.

Lime causes changes in the levels of cadmium and metals with low abundance in the soil and causes the outflow of molybdenum with low abundance. According to OSHA rules, the maximum amount of molybdenum exposure is 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week with a molybdenum level of 15 grams per cubic meter. NIOSH also states that the molybdenum exposure range is 5000 mg / m3.

Molybdenum poisoning :

Molybdenum caused by molybdenum is much higher than its lack. This poisoning is usually seen in a herd of animals that feed on soils that contain high concentrations of molybdenum. At a dose of 10-15 mg / day, molybdenum can cause acute gout.
