Self-healing concrete

Concrete is one of the most widely used materials that have been used for many years in a variety of construction and construction projects . Concrete can be represented as high resistance to the affected forces , due to the strong stiffness and strength that it has .  On the other hand , researchers themselves are constantly trying to improve the properties of these materials . One of the types of concretes currently in use is self-healing concrete.

What is self-healing concrete

The difference between self-healing concrete and ordinary concrete is in its composition. These concretes contain a type of nanoparticle with unique properties called Carbon Nano Tubes. adding a small amount of this material to concrete improve the mechanical properties of the concrete made up of the two main phases of portland cement and water . Although self-healing concrete is now used in some projects, researchers are still investigating the positive effects of these particles on concrete.

the importance of using self heading  concrete in constructon

The use of concretes in a variety of construction and construction projects is due to the excellent properties of these materials . These characteristics can be pointed to high resistance , excellent ductility of the concrete , very simple and readily accessible materials , high resistance to the rise of temperature and its long useful life . But in addition to all these unique features, concretes also have a major drawback, which requires maintenance.

In fact, although concrete has a high compressive strength, it is weak against tensile forces As a result , when the stretching forces enter it , there is a change in state and the probability of cracking is possible . Cracks may be so tiny at first that we can't even see them with the naked eye, but they gradually expand and eventually lead to concrete disintegration. In the past, the repair of cracked concrete was done by manpower and with difficulty, which, despite the great time and money they put into it, could not completely eliminate the cracks and only reduced the risk of rupture. Therefore ,they sought to recover their concrete , so that the problem could be resolved . Self-healing concrete in its current form was first produced in 2015 by Dutch researchers, also called bioconcrete. These researchers were able to produce this crop by incorporating the science of civil engineering and marine biology.

The difference between self-healing concrete and ordinary concrete

The most important difference between ordinary concrete and self-healing concrete is the same self-healing ability that does not exist in ordinary concrete. However , these two types of concrete have different differences . For example, the use of special technologies in self-healing concrete increases the compressive strength and flexural strength of concrete. The two types of concrete are also very different in terms of price.

Types of carbon nanotubes used in self-healing concrete

The particles themselves that produce their own property are different . The carbon nanotubes used for this type of concrete are:

Hollow fiber

Hollow fibers were first discovered in 1992 by scientists Dray and Sotos . They found that this material could release a set of chemicals stored in the hollow fibers . As a result, by adding it to cement, the degree of permeability, flexibility, prevention of corrosion and, most importantly, the repair properties of cement and concrete can be significantly improved. In this type of concrete, the phenomenon of bruising in living organisms in concrete is simulated. They are using a series of fluorescent colors and putting them through the fabric of the concrete . As a result , the color itself has the responsibility to recognize the damaged location . This way ,which has been released after detection of damage , the healing agent has been released from a thin , hollow fiber and by filling the cracks . Therefore , the mechanism of repair of concrete cracks will be carried out through empty fibers in the following steps :

1. The onset of cross-sectional cracking

2. Release of repair materials from hollow fibers

3. Filling cracks with restorative agents
