Solar furnace is a device that is made from a very large number of flat mirrors , which are electronically controlled to concentrate sunlight in a small area to produce very high temperatures .

What is solar furnace

Solar furnace is a device that is made from a very large number of flat mirrors , which are electronically controlled to concentrate sunlight in a small area to produce very high temperatures . Solar furnace is shaped as a concave plate and reflective mirror .

The lights are out of infinity , so after the reflection , they pass by a certain point called center . Then the heat and temperature are much higher than the other points . This heat is used to produce hot water and hot water vapor to plant a power plant turbine .

The black pipes filled with water are located next to each other in an area with black surfaces or covering with soil under the roof collector . They are filled with water once and then the tubes are closed, so that the water doesn't evaporate . The volume of water within the tubes is equalized with water level of 5 to 20 cm in terms of the desired output power type .

The solar furnace is made up of a large solar reflector , whose opening is perpendicular to the ground and towards the north . Concentrators of incoming light in a heat zone is called focused center .

Considering optical losses , the furnace temperature can be predicted through the focus ratio . The ratio of opening surface concentrator to the concentrated surface is referred to as concentration ratio
For example , the required concentration ratio  for 1500° C is 1000 and for 2000° C is 10,000 .

Of the properties of this furnace is that in the vicinity of the temperature even 3800° C , the heat does not bother and can even work within a few cm of the thermal zone .

History of solar furnace

The first use of solar furnace  dates back to the 18th century . Notora invented the first solar furnace in France , and using it burned a wooden pile at a distance of 60 meters . Henry Bessemer , the father of steel of the world , also supplied heat from solar energy .

The most common system of a solar furnace consists of two mirrors , one flat with another spherical . The sun is reflected to the mirror and reflects to the spherical mirror . There are many projects in the field of solar furnaces in all parts of the world . The largest solar furnace in the world is in France .

The solar furnace is used to produce very pure metals such as tungsten and fireproof materials and fireproof metals , which are not possible to produce with the normal furnaces . Monte Luiz in France is built by a power of 50 KW capable of melting any metals . In the United States , the solar furnace is built with 23 KW power , which is used in producing active coal .

According to the reflection conditions of our country , Iran , there are many regions that have more than 300 sunny days and can be used in the construction of the solar furnace . Lack of city facilitates for constructing  solar furnaces , allows these furnaces to turn mineral ores to pure metals and the send to consumption centers . Thus more profits can get to the manufacturing centers .

Solar furnace function

High temperature for the solar furnace is produced by greenhouse effect . To produce this effect , a simple collector , consisting of a glass or a plastic layer , is used . The collector is placed horizontally to two or six meters  above the ground .

The height of the area covering with the furnace increases so that the air is perpendicular to the minimum level of friction . The covering gets the short waves of sunlight , and then makes the long waves from hot ground . Hence , the ground over the roof is heated and heat is transferred  within the solar furnace .

Advantages of solar furnace

The solar furnaces are very reliable and do not make any difference in comparison to other solar power plants . Turbines , generators and transmitters which are exposed to continuous air flow , are only moving parts of the solar furnace . The solar furnace is in need of the lowest maintenance cost and does not require burning fuel . Moreover , the solar furnace does not need cooling down with water .

This is a very good advantage , especially for the countries that have benefited from a sufficient supply of solar energy , but unfortunately there are difficulties for supplying drinking water .

Due to the thermal storage system available in the solar furnace , the solar furnace can work 24 hours with the sun's pure energy .
The water pipes under the glass ceiling absorb part of the radiation energy during the day , and release it in the evening . Therefore solar furnaces can produce electricity at night .
