Retrofitting

Steel buildings have very good resistance and ductility if they have a proper design and are implemented accurately, but due to the lack of use of expert executive forces and mistaken assumptions of steel buildings, there are disadvantages and defects that require retrofitting and improvement.

Steel buildings are often damaged under seismic loads due to local buckling and are not functioning properly. Or they need retrofitting because of corrosion. Steel structures can be retrofitted in a variety of ways, which are the most important and efficient methods in this paper together.

Retracting or pre-tanning technique

In this method, FRP fibers are used to strengthen beams. In the technique of retraction, induction of tension in pre-tuning cables causes the akhli forces to be distributed in the member of the porter and the capacity of the bearing member increases and this strengthens the beam.

Add suitable steel sheet to beam

We can increase the bending bearing capacity of beams by connecting steel sheets to stretching in concrete beams. In this method, steel sheets with a thickness of up to 3 cm, using a material called epoxy resin, stick to the surface of the beams. This sticking of steel sheet to the beam surface increases the shear strength of the beam and finally the strength of our steel structure increases dramatically.

Retrofitting steel structure using steel jacket

In this method, steel jackets are used to increase the compressive and shear strength of the columns of steel structures. These jackets enclose the columns, which increases the ductility of the column.

Using sub-beams between columns

In some steel structures, beams do not have the ability to load the imported and this high load causes the occurrence of the phenomenon. For this reason, for retrofitting among the main beams, they add a strain that causes the weight of the walls to be halved on the beams and this weight is divided.

In this method of retrofitting, the added beam connection should be considered jointly so that it does not resist the lateral force.

The cost of retrofitting steel structures

The cost of retrofitting steel structures is not a fixed amount and is subject to various factors such as severity and amount of failure, type of failure, steel structure retrofitting method, type of applied materials, etc. depends. In general, it can be said that although the cost of retrofitting is generally high, it is definitely less and more cost effective than costs such as demolition and reconstruction of structures.
